INSTITUTE OF AYURVEDA AND INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE (IAIM)


1. INTRODUCTION:

"Over the past 15 years FRLHT has designed & implemented several strategic interventions to demonstrate the contemporary relevance of Indian Medical Heritage. The three thrust areas of FRLHT’s work are: exposition of the theory & practice of traditional systems of medicine; conservation of the natural resources used by Indian systems of medicine and revitalization of social processes for transmission of the knowledge on a size and scale that will have societal impact. (See www.frlht.org for profile of FRLHT’s current programs). In 2008 FRLHT has designed a new intervention viz Institute for Ayurveda and Integrated Medicine (IAIM)

IAIM is a specialized medical research & education wing of FRLHT. The Governing Council of FRLHT has approved an independent management structure for IAIM to guide and review its progress. The Joint Director of IAIM is a member of FRLHT’s Executive Board. The Administrative and Financial systems of IAIM, although manned by full-time personnel, are fully integrated with the prevailing systems in FRLHT. IAIM shares exactly the same vision as FRLHT and its various functional groups.

2. Mission of IAIM:

To design and implement high quality, innovative education, research and clinical service programs on Ayurveda and Integrative medicine on a size and scale that will have social impact.

IAIM fervently believes that the country’s traditional healthcare systems have enormous contemporary relevance and therefore must occupy their rightful space alongside other health systems that are available to the Indian and global community. For this to happen key interventions are needed in medical education clinical research & surgery. With the support of the research and knowledge orientation of FRLHT, IAIM will take the lead in expanding the scope of Ayurvedic education & surgery. IAIM will initiate MS and PhD programs in “Integrative Health Sciences”. It will be guided by the holistic principles of the traditional health sciences, use traditional pedagogic concepts, cutting edge IT tools & an epistemologically informed inter-face with bio medical sciences.

3. Five Year Goals: (2008-2013)

The five year goals of IAIM are as shown below:

A. Clinical services:

1. Establishing a self-financing, 100 bed Ayurvedic hospital, with basic bio-medical diagnostic facilities.

2. Implementation of a standardized clinical documentation protocol based on Ayurveda, Yoga and bio-medical parameters.

B. Clinical research:

1. Developing a standardized, integrative, case-documentation format for recording diagnosis, treatment and progress.

2. Developing high quality researched notes on good clinical practice for 12 specialty areas identified by IAIM hospital.

3. Standardizing an innovative master health check up scheme based on principles of Ayurveda and Yoga sastra.

4. Participating in strategic coordinated research projects like Ayu-Genomics (A multi-centric study initiated by the PSA to the Prime Minister’s Office, to explore the genomic basis of the Ayurvedic classification of human types{Prakriti})

5. Undertaking clinical research on strategically selected problems in fields like:
1. Women & Child Health
2. Geriatrics
3. Mental Health
4. Diabetes Mellitus++
5. Skin Diseases
6. Cardiac Disorders
7. Neurological Disorders
8. Musculo-skeletal disorders
9. Gastro-intestinal disorders+++
10. Respiratory tract disorders

C. EDUCATION:

C-1. Designing innovative:
1. Establishing a self-financing, IT aided, training school which will provide innovative, job-oriented, short-term courses, for doctors, therapists, pharmacists, and nurses in good clinical practice.
2. Design & Development of innovative PG and Doctoral programs in integrative medicine:

D. LITERARY RESEARCH

1. Prepare a comprehensive catalogue of Ayurveda & Sidha medical manuscripts of the country.
2. Publish critical translations of important medical manuscripts.
3. Develop and publish texts on darshnas (that form the theoretical foundations of all Indian Health Sciences. including the relationship between science and sastra.
4. To undertake literary research on Ayurvedic Nutraceuticals.

E. CORPORATE SERVICES

1. Design & Develop contemporary Knowledge Products based on the Traditional health Sciences for health Industry.
2. Develop Standard operating products for effective application of the knowledge products by the industry.

Courses for doctors 08-09

IIAIM has designed the following programmes for medical professionals to teach them advanced applications of good clinical practices of Ayurveda and Yoga Shastras. The courses are professionally designed by taking into account the present and future clinical and managerial roles of the doctors, as well as the paramedics in modern day Ayurveda based health care centres. The following is the list of Advanced Courses for Ayurvedic doctors, who already possess BAMS or MD (Ay) / MS (Ay)

The healthcare profession has a huge requirement for paramedical professionals who enable the actual implementation of healthcare decisions made by the doctors. IAIM has designed and developed the following courses of study for paramedical professional in Ayurveda and Yoga – These courses will enable the paramedics to work as effective and efficient members of integrative healthcare teams
